Pianist Mulgrew Miller Headlines SOJA Fundraiser

Renowned pianist Mulgrew Miller will perform with trumpeter Marcus Printup on Saturday, May 23rd at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta’s Little Five Points. The concert is a fundraiser for the SOJA, the Southeastern Organization for Jazz Arts and proceeds will be used to enhance the organization’s jazz education and outreach efforts. In keeping with SOJA’s dedication to Atlanta musicians, Miller and Printup will be accompanied by artists from the metro area. Miller’s most recent release as a frontman, 2007’s Live at the Kennedy Center: Volume 2, highlights a piano sound honed during years of playing with the top musicians in jazz. Miller has been a member of the bands of Mercer Ellington, Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Woody Shaw, and the Tony Williams Quintet..Throughout his career, Miller has maintained a prolific schedule as a sideman, recording with Terence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, among others. He is the most recorded jazz pianist of his generation. In 2006, Miller was named Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.

Printup, a native of Conyers, Ga., is currently a member of Wynton Marsalis’ 15-member Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. When not performing with the group, Printup can be heard in clubs and restaurants around Atlanta. He has recorded with the Wycliffe Gordon Sextet, Cyrus Chestnut, Carl Allen and Dianne Reeves. His latest release as a leader is 2009’s London Lullaby.
Based in Atlanta, the Southeastern Organization for Jazz Arts was created to encourage the growth of jazz through educational programs that focus on history and continued development of the genre. Through its "Jazz in the Home" series, SOJA promotes concerts by local and national musicians in private homes throughout the Atlanta metro area. SOJA, founded in 2004, is registered as a tax exempt, non-profit arts education organization. Membership is open to all individuals, groups, and corporations based in the southeast.
