Dallas Brass Band

The "Music in the Schools" project is designed to have the Dallas Brass come to your community for a daylong residency.
Here's how the day works:

1. Clinic -- Dallas Brass offers tips on becoming better musicians, including discussion on practicing, breathing, and other subjects that apply to all instrumentalists. Clinic includes performance of several selections and opportunity for student questions.

2. Student rehearsal(s) -- Dallas Brass invites band students to join them onstage at the evening performance. Typically a high school band and a middle school band, of approximately 100 students per ensemble, perform one piece each with Dallas Brass. Rehearsals with each group take place during the day.

3. Evening public concert -- American Musical Journey. A fun, fast-paced and entertaining performance; music from the time of George Washington to the present day; great for the whole family.

Thank you for your continued support of our band program.

Ken Gregory and Solid State

Ken began playing trumpet in 1959, and played in the Northside Highlander Concert band from 1960-1963. After completing four years of private training, he played 1st chair trumpet in his high school concert band from 1963-1968. Immediately after that he worked as conductor and lead trumpet player for the Six Flags Over Georgia orchestra from 1968-1971. His natural musical interests brought him to playing guitar, electric bass, and keyboards, and he began working in nightclub bands, in which he played full-time from 1971-1980.

1981 he formed a partnership with an electronics technician, and moved into the professional studio business. Performance venues changed from clubs to private parties and concerts. He continues to develop his studio and has recorded over 1000 albums.

As a composer, he has been commissioned to write music for various clients such as Warner Bros. Films, CNN, the Weather Channel, many radio and TV advertisers as well as for songwriters and lyricists of all types. Ken has played trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass and keyboard on thousands of studio sessions, and is quite familiar with orchestration, arranging and composition, as well as audio engineering and MIDI programming techniques.

Ken's band "Solid State", performs their original compositions, and has been featured on WRFG, WBCX, & WCLK FM radio stations, PBS Television's "Jazz Atlanta", at The Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Inman Park Festival, and the Atlanta Arts Festival, as well in many jazz clubs and private parties. Ken continues to be active in the professional music and recording business in Atlanta.

Oliver Wood

Oliver and Chris Wood grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Sons of a Poet and a Microbiologist, they both took up music. Oliver moved to Atlanta and became a southerner. Chris moved to New York City and became a Yankee. Now, after years of musical and geographical separation they have reunited.

While in Atlanta, Oliver soaked up the roots of blues, the soul of the south, and found he had a talent for writing and singing songs. His band, King Johnson (named after Freddy King and Robert Johnson) toured mostly in the southern states. Meanwhile, Chris was living in Manhattan playing everything from free jazz to rock and roll. This is where he met his band mates to form Medeski Martin & Wood.

Now The Wood Brothers have begun a collaboration that combines their shared childhood influences with everything they've learned since leaving home. Their music has a rootsy feel that blends blues, folk, and rock music in a guitar/bass duo.
