Jazz Appreciation Month - April 2008
In the planning-A series of fund raising concerts and educational events sponsored by the Southeastern Organization for Jazz Arts, concurrent with Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History annual public spotlight on jazz.
April was designated Jazz Appreciation Month, or JAM, and is intended to draw the public's attention to jazz as both an historical and a living national treasure, through incouraging musicians, concert halls, schools, libraries, arts organizations and public broadcasters to offer special programs on jazz throughout the month.

U.S. Public Law 108-72
U.S. Congress passed legislation which was signed by President George W. Bush in August 2003, Public Law 108-72, declaring “(1) the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History should be commended for establishing a Jazz Appreciation Month; and (2) musicians, schools, colleges, libraries, concert halls, museums, radio and television stations, and other organizations should develop programs to explore, perpetuate, and honor jazz as a national and world treasure.”
Governors Who Have Proclaimed April To Be Jazz Appreciation Month
A number of US state governors have issued proclamations declaring April to be Jazz Appreciation Month in their states:
